ACTOR Faizal Hussein is excited about his latest leading role in the movie, Abu Ya, which opens in cinemas tomorrow.

The 44-year-old actually plays an anti-hero in the movie. His character, Abu Zakaria, was the infamous leader who returned from religious studies in the Middle East, changed his name to Abu Ya and started a religious group that promoted violence and orgies.

Abu Ya also stars Jue Aziz, Iqbal Mazlan, Adrea Abdullah and Yank Kassim.

“Malay films rarely have an anti-hero as the lead role,” says Faizal, who has been in the industry for more than 25 years. “Movies like this are often made in the West but not in Malaysia.”

Faizal salutes director Imran Ismail for coming up with the unusual script as well as wanting to present something different to movie-goers.

The actor believes that the local film industry can only move forward when filmmakers dare to be more experimental with their themes.
