A country with history and a heartbeat Derek Foo, Lim Song Lip, Jeremy Tan and Elizabeth Lee, Rediscover.sg
Like most students in their last year of university, Derek Foo, Lim Song Lip, Jeremy Tan and Elizabeth Lee are contemplating their futures as working adults. They are worried and uncertain about what exactly they want to do and what the future holds for them in this fast-changing society of ours.
Instead of whining about the state of things on their Facebook accounts, the quartet from Nanyang Technological University’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information have been documenting the lives, places and heritage we sometimes take for granted on Rediscover.sg, a website which, like its name suggests, uncovers and rediscovers different facets of Singaporean life.
“Actually, the website was started by our boss, Claudia Lim, at Dice Studio,” explained Derek, 24. Dice Studio is the media firm they are interning at. “She had the domain for two years and it wasn’t really doing much so she got us to work on it. She was very open and didn’t give us any restrictions.”
They brainstormed and focused on the word “rediscover” when deciding on the content of the website. “It’s a poignant word. We asked ourselves what it meant,” said Song, 25. “After considering the name and our personal experiences, we knew we wanted to put the spotlight on facets of Singapore which we grew up with and made Singapore home – but are disappearing or which we pass by but never noticed.”
