Executioner From Shaolin (1977 ““ 98min.) is directed and action-directed by Chia-Liang Liu, scripted by Ni Kuang and features Lo Lieh, Lily Li, Kuan Tai Chen, and Gordon Liu. Gordon Liu is not a big star of the film, but while he is on screen he is brilliant with what little he is given. Lo Lieh plays a villain who is part of the destruction of Shaolin Temple, and who killed the Abbot.
The survivors are few and scattered, but our main characters gather to hide amongst a Chinese Opera troupe that sails with the Red Boats. This gives some of the standard kung fu film moments an added point of cultural interest (though not as much as one might find in Chang Cheh’s almost hallucinatory Attack of the Joy God ““ add that one for an interesting double-feature night sometime).
As the story unfolds further, one of the survivors from Shaolin meets and falls in love with a woman who practices Crane Style; their initial rivalry gives way to romance and they have a son.
