Berlin gives special slots to Sacrifice, Speech1 min readReading Time: < 1 minute
Chen Kaige’s film Sacrifice was selected for the Berlin festival in a special screening slot. Australian-UK co-production The Kings Speech, and a strong Oscar contender, was also selected.
The announcements today largely bring to a close the Berlinale’s string of selection announcements across its many sections.
They also underline the dearth of Asian films in major positions in the festival this year.
Only one East or South Asian film, South Korean drama Come Rain Come Shine was selected for main competition. And the berths for films by big name Chinese directors Chen and Zhang Yimou, seems uncomfortable. Zhang’s light melodrama Under The Hawthorn Tree is relegated to the teen-oriented Generation K-Plus gulag.
