Boo Junfeng has emerged as one of Singapore’s most prominent young directors since the release this year of his first feature film.

“Sandcastle” is a coming-of-age story about an 18-year-old facing the skeletons in his family’s closet.

Singapore in recent years has taken steps to expand its role as a media and entertainment hub, and “Sandcastle” was funded largely by the Singapore Film Commission, which through its New Feature Film Fund seeks “to nurture the next generation of aspiring local filmmakers.”

“It never was intended to be a political film. It’s simply about being socially conscious and politically aware. But I hope “Sandcastle” can set a certain benchmark when it comes to addressing issues and allowing discussion.”
