China’s all-time box office champ looks to make waves in US
With more than 600 million yuan (65 million euros) already in the bank, China’s all-time box office champion Aftershock opens in the United States to tap into more riches and acclaim.
China will test uncharted waters for a mainland production as the first such film to gain release in the US, albeit at limited cinemas nationwide.
Chinese authorities have meanwhile marked the occasion by telling the Chinese film industry not to get ahead of itself. “Rising numbers don’t necessarily mean growth,” the spokesman told the China Daily.
Despite total box office receipts of 7.5 billion yuan (811 million euros) by September – by far the most ever recorded in China – a spokesman for the government-run State Film Bureau this week said the Chinese film industry was “witnessing a lack of creativity.”
