Cheap laughs over a long meal1 min read

(Nasi Lemak 2.0) It is a modern tale of Malaysian identity, with a little too much to tell.

A kitchen is in danger of being torn into half by two siblings. The business’ matron intervenes, and proposes a competition reminescent of Hong Kong comedian Stephen Chow’s “God of Cookery”.

It is a battle of the culinary arts. Only the best cook will win; and keep the business as a result.

Enter Chef Huang (Wee Meng Chee), a present-day cook with a mastery of Chinese cuisine and a terrible eye for business.

Though prejudiced against all other types of food, Huang is also a local hero of sorts, and comes to the aid of Xiao K (Karen Kong), the daughter of one of the kitchen’s warring siblings.

He unfortunately loses his business soon after, but is nonetheless roped by Xiao to represent her father in the cooking challenge. Along the way, Huang tastes nasi lemak for the first time in his life, and becomes convinced that the local dish is the ultimate meal.
