Three Asian films have been selected to screen in competition at the 67th Venice film festival, running from 1st to 11th September this year.

The trio includes the long-predicted 13 Assassins by Miike Takashi, and Norwegian Wood by Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung.

Less certain to be included in the selection is Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame by Tsui Hark.

After hints that the 2010 line up would feature Asian films prominently, having just three films from the Asian region in competition seems a little modest. But this is partially counter-balanced with Anurag Kashyap’s That Girl in Yellow Boots and Stanley Kwan’s Showtime screening out of competition.

The official screenings selection also has Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen scheduled as the second film on the opening night of the festival. Directed by Hong Kong’s Andrew Lau, it will screen out of competition to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the birth of Bruce Lee.
