I was at Harry’s @ The Esplanade on Friday, November 3, for the Canon Digital Video Fest 2006 appreciation dinner for all the 20 festival finalists. Surprise, surprise — I ran into some old friends, including one from secondary school. Looks like more people are taking a shot at the film industry in Singapore.

Canon DV Fest 2006At the dinner, we got to see trailers for all the shortlisted films, and the standard seems pretty competitive compared to what I remember from last year’s competition. It turns out that one of the finalists from the secondary school section is already in the midst of shooting his second film outside Singapore.

We also saw a new short film shot on Canon’s new HD camera. It was directed by Alaric Tay, who also starred in it, and it’s about two ah beng “brothers” and their loyalty to each other, protecting one another when in danger. With graphics and sound effects to help, it was quite the rollicking fun film!

jojoteng’s short film, Big Boy Hao, is a finalist in the Media Student category of the Canon Digital Video Festival 2006. Sinema.sg will bring you a round-up of the shortlisted films in every category over the next two weeks.

Watch and vote for your favourite short films by November 23, and you could win a Canon Powershot A430!
