The Asian Film Archive will be kicking off 2022 on a lighthearted note with two comedy programmes.

Screening at Oldham Theatre from 15 January to 4 February 2022, Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s jovial romantic comedy Cheerful Wind will be presented in digitally restored 2K. A box office hit in 1982 starring pop icons Feng Fei-Fei, Kenny Bee and Anthony Chan, Cheerful Wind presents another look at the acclaimed auteur, who is perhaps better known for sombre films that have come to define the New Taiwanese Cinema.

Joining in to usher in 2022 is the comedy programme hahaha: a season of comedy. From 7 January to 27 February, the Asian Film Archive will be celebrating one of cinema’s most pleasurable genres with ten films across five decades and eight countries. Highlights include P. Ramlee’s Pendekar Bujang Lapok from 1959, part of a comic quadrilogy produced by Shaw Brothers’ Malay Film Productions focusing on the antics of over-aged bachelors, and Ann Hui’s critically-acclaimed Summer Snow from 1995, and Maung Sun’s Money Has Four Legs from 2021.

Find out more and grab your tickets to both programmes now from the Asian Film Archive.
