For the first time in Oscars history, the academy released the short lists in nine categories all at once. On Monday, December 17, the hopefuls in a wide range of races found out if they are still in contention for the 91st annual Academy Awards. Among these are the marquee awards for Best Documentary Feature, which went down from 166 submitted films to only 15 selected. Members of the Documentary Branch vote to determine the shortlist and the nominees.

Amongst the shortlist for Best Documentary Feature is Shirkers (2018), a documentary film by local filmmaker Sandi Tan. It premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival in January and won the World Cinema Documentary Directing Award. Shirkers was also released on October 26, 2018, on Netflix. Singaporean-born filmmaker Sandi Tan pursued film-making at New York University, making short films that travelled as far as the short film festival Clermont-Ferrand in France, where her 2001 Gourmet Baby played in competition.

Nominations for the 91st annual Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019.
