Now, some 30 years since its initial release, Alien and its sequels Aliens, Alien3 and Alien Resurrection have all been thrust together into one big Alien Blu-ray orgy.

A “˜scrappy little independent film’ according to Sigourney, Alien was filmed over the course of 14 weeks at Surrey’s Shepperton Studios.

But while the sequels have all proved immensely popular with audiences (the second film, Aliens, made over $130m, while each of the following two sequels took around $160m at the box office), it was the first film in the sequence which provided audiences with their most visceral jolt.

“I think Alien really was ahead of its time,” says Sigourney. “It showed that women and men could do the same jobs and that in many ways, women’s patience and fortitude and organisation sometimes made them better suited for dangerous work than men.”
