About the director: TZANG MERWYN TONG
An independent script writer/ film director with three award winning 45 minute films to date. Tzang’s films are characterized by his rather offbeat style, often set in a surreal environment, incorporating elements of fairytale and comic fantasy.
His second film, A Wicked Tale premiered to a sold-out crowd at the 2005 Rotterdam International Film Festival, and was selected to be the Closing Night Film at the Montreal FanTasia Film Fesitval. A maverick with his own brand of uncanny-ness, Tzang represents a new voice in alternative cinema.
Director’s statement
“In the 70s, Sci Fi films are made with a fraction of today’s Hollywood budget, but they are just as powerful and immersive. As an artist/ storyteller, I choose to believe that it is not the budget, but the imagination, that counts.
Drawing inspiration from Shakespeare’s A Mid Summer Night’s Dream and 70s Sci Fi Films, fairies are depicted in V1k1 as electric beings that exist to create balance in the Universe. They are unpredictable, quasi-enlightened, yet vulnerable to curiosity. Problem happens when fairies get infected by man’s curiosity – to know the unknowable. I’m curious to see what people will make of this world we created, on our indie budget. It’s fairies we are talking about. Not quite a common entity in cinema, much less, independent cinema.” – Tzang M.
V1K1 will be screening at Sinema Old School on 21st and 23rd of April 2011
