Two weeks ago, we announced a really exciting partnership between Vimeo and Story & Heartthat is going to bring a lot of free – yes, FREE! – educational goodness to the Vimeo blog. To say we’re excited to combine our communities and help support all filmmakers in a big way is an understatement. We’re very, super, uber excited! Exclamation points!!!

Our weekly blog posts will be a mixture of video tutorials (such as “Shutter Speed vs Frame Rate“), written posts (such as “How to Get Better Answers to Your Interview Questions“), and Q&A roundup posts (such as this very post your eyeballs are reading right now), where we’ll answer community-submitted questions to plunge even further into a particular topic.

Matty Brown, 15-time Vimeo Staff Pick recipient and Academy educator, recently shared a glimpse into his process for creating killer transitions, using “Playground, Italy“ as a case study.

Curious Vimeans chimed in with their thoughts and questions, and Matty has happily weighed in below to answer each question and offer more insight into his creative process:

Stork: Do you speed up/scale and move the clips during “motion transition,” or do you shoot several clips with various speeds and camera movements so you’ll have more to work with?

Matty: I sometimes shoot multiple shots to get different speeds for the camera movement when whipping away or jolting it around, but most of the time, I like to just shoot one shot and adjust the speed at the end of the clip when I’m beginning to whip away. If you are moving away too slowly, then when you speed it up in post, it will look funny and might not give the same effect. So, if you are unsure, you should try to shoot it again with faster movement in-camera.
