The story of Hengdian, home to the world’s largest outdoor film studio, will soon be told on China’s big screen ““ with the spotlight not on the stars, but on the thousands of extras behind them.

“I Am Somebody”, a romantic comedy helmed by Hong Kong director Derek Yee, follows the misadventures of Wan Guopeng and his friends in the small eastern Chinese town ““ where the booming film industry has seen the population balloon over the past decade to its current 180,000.

A former actor who grew up the son of film-industry parents, the 57″“year-old director has long been familiar with show business in China. But it was the extras in Hengdian ““ sometimes referred to as “China’s Hollywood” – that really intrigued him.
