Toei announces 2011 lineup

In addition to new films by acclaimed Japanese directors — including Sakamoto Junji, Morita Yoshimitsu and Kumakiri Kazuyoshi’s — Japan’s Toei will handle Japanese distribution of high profile Korean films The Man from Nowhere and My Way.

The company yesterday held an event to announce its 2011 distribution lineup and celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Nishikori Yoshinari’s Wasao, opening 5 March, is based on the true story of Kikuya Setsuko and the ugly-but-cute Akita dog she adopted. The drama has been sold to Hong Kong’s Golden Scene, Taiwan’s Catchplay and Singapore’s Encore Films.

Next up is Sato Hideaki’s opening for Japan’s “Golden Week” on 30 Apr. Based on Takei Yasuhito’s biography, the late manga author Akatsuka Fujio (1935-2008) is portrayed by Asano Tadanobu. The story is told through the eyes of Horikita Maki’s editor.
