Japan’s Toho Up 14.3% to $897 Million in 20101 min read

Big hits have propelled Toho, and probably the Japanese box office overall, to a record year in 2010.

Toho clocked up 74.8 billion yen ($897 million) in 2010, its best-ever box-office year, up 14.3 percent on 2009.

The year finished on a high note in December, up 58.2 percent on 2009, with receipts from hits such as Space Battleship Yamato, Akunin (Villain), Umizaru The Last Message, 13 Assassins, Norwegian Wood and the year’s biggest domestic hit, The Borrowers.

With Toho accounting for more than a third of total box office, and with takings boosted by 3D ticket prices, Japan looks set to top the record 210 billion yen overall total set in 2004.
