Taiwan distributor CatchPlay has announced the NT$900 million CatchPlay Film Production Fund No. 1 to invest in 25 movies in the next five years.

Wayne Chang, CatchPlay’s general manager, said that no titles have yet been confirmed, but that they will be a mix of Hollywood and Greater China projects.

Chang believes that the high volume of titles they release permits them to operate as a major, block-booking cinemas the whole year so that they are able to increase or decrease the number of screens showing particular titles on a daily basis to reflect demand.

CatchPlay’s aggressive buying spree of both new and library titles has antagonised competing distributors. Their detractors complain that they overpay for rights and that they are an assembly line operation that doesn’t pay attention to the specific marketing needs of individual titles.
