Shochiku announced the next film by Yamada Yoji, “Tokyo Kazoku”, a contemporary homage to Ozu Yasujiro’s 1953 classic Tokyo Story.

Shooting will begin in April 2011 with Shochiku planning to distribute the film in early 2012.

The film also celebrates the 50th anniversary of Yamada’s debut as a director with The Strangers Upstairs. Yamada, who worked with Ozu at the Shochiku Ofuna Studio where Tokyo Story was filmed, stated, “I feel extremely lucky to be working on such a wonderful project for this memorial point of my career. It will be a challenge, but I am very excited.”

Yamada continued, “I was always attracted to Tokyo Story as a film, and also its great structure of depicting family and human beings, which have always been a centre of my interest as a subject to my films. With respect to the original work, which is loved by fans all over the world, I would like to take the concept and heart of Tokyo Story and bring the story to contemporary Tokyo.”
