Taiwan-based director Tsai Ming-liang received the Golden Owl Lifetime Achievement Award at the Leeds International Film Festival Nov. 16.

Tsai expressed gratitude for being the first recipient of such an honor, adding that he has wanted to make good movies ever since he entered the film industry.

Following the award ceremony, Tsai’s short film “Madame Butterfly” was shown to the audience. In making the film, Tsai adopted a free and personal interpretation of Puccini’s classic opera to depict the plight of a woman abandoned by her lover and always waiting for him to return.

Tsai said he will start shooting his next production in a couple of months in Taiwan, adding that the story will be developed in a different style.
