Elliott first came to Thailand in 1989 after winning an IDRC Young Canadian Researchers Award, which provides sponsorship to budding journalists interested in international issues.

She worked as a news reporter for the Bangkok Post, covering refugee situations, Cambodia and the heroin trade.
