THE theatre was quiet for about two seconds before the applause broke the silence. And this reviewer inadvertantly found herself letting out a small sigh and smiling to herself in the dark.

I had a chance to catch Boo Junfeng’s Sandcastle during its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and as the audience embraced the first Singapore film to be selected for International Critics week, there was no escaping the swell of national pride in my chest and the sense of delight on seeing homegrown talent on a job well done.
