According to China’s State Administration of Radio, Film & Television (SARFT), box office income for the first quarter of 2011 fell 11% from RMB2.93 billion ($448 million) in 2011 to RMB2.60 billion ($397 million).
However, last year’s numbers were arguably distorted by the success of Avatar. The epic 3-D film made RMB1.35 billion ($206 million) after opening on 4 Jan 2010, representing 46% of box office income in the first quarter of last year.
