IMAX theaters in China registered exceptional earnings of $640,000 over the weekend with their screenings of Feng Xiaogang’s blockbuster Aftershock.

According to IMAX and Hua Yi Media Corporation, the film generated the earnings from the 12 screens that carried the movie in its large-screen version.

Aftershock is the first Chinese mainstream commercial film produced and distributed by a studio outside the US to be digitally re-mastered into the IMAX format.

“The early results of this effort bode well for us, as IMAX explores converting other local content in China and elsewhere,” said Richard Gelfond, CEO of IMAX Corp.

Huayi reported that the film cashed in $23.5million over its opening weekend.  It will open on 3 additional IMAX screens in early August.

China is IMAX’s fastest-growing market with 23 IMAX cinemas opened to date. The company has plans for more than 50 IMAX theaters by 2012.
