SFS Heritage Talkies #3 – GOLDEN SLUMBER
The Singapore Film Society welcomes 2017 with a new initiative – the SFS Heritage Talkies! This series aim to share local and regional films, with a heritage perspective, to complement with the Singapore Heritage Short Film Competition programme.
After two successful screenings of Singapore’ HOMECOMING, and Malaysia’s RETURN TO NOSTALGIA, we head further north of the Asian hinterland, and drop off at Cambodia. This time, director DAVY CHOU tries to trace the golden generation of Cambodian cinema in the 1960s, which unfortunately had been mostly lost due to the ravages of war.
There will be a post-screening dialogue with director DAVY CHOU after the screening.
Dir. Davy Chou / Cambodia / 96 min / 1960s / PG
Cambodian cinema flourished in the 1960s, drawing huge crowds to theaters around the country, until the industry was destroyed by the Khmers Rouges in 1975. Of the 400 films produced, only 30 remain today. Almost all the actors were killed during the reign of Pol Pot and only a few of the directors were able to flee the country. Most of the old movie theatres of Phnom Penh have become restaurants, karoke clubs or squats. Golden Slumbers resurrects the myths and legends of this lost cinema. Through survivors’ stories and the search for remnants of their era in modern Phnom Penh, the film reveals the vital importance mvies had for an entire generation, as well as the complex legacy they leave today’s youth to inherit.

About Singapore Film Society
For more than 50 years, the Singapore Film Society has been conceptualizing, sourcing, programming, marketing and managing a year-round line-up of quality film screenings.
Singapore Film Society became the first film society in the world to be based in a state-of-the-art, city-centre multiplex when we moved into Golden Village Marina in 1996. After 18 wonderful years of being based there with our GV friends, we relocated with them in 2014 to Suntec City where we now have both our base screening venue and our new office.
Led by Chairman Kenneth Tan who has over 30 years’ industry experience, our enthusiastic and highly experienced team can conceptualize, create, and maximize the impact of any cinema-related event, big or small. We have one of the most well established membership bases in the region.
