春寒 Love in Chilly Spring

One of Taiwan’s legendary singers, the late Feng Fei-fei, made her silver-screen debut in 1979 in this wartime romantic melodrama set in the mountains of Yilan during the final days of WWII. Young and free-spirited Xiulan falls in love at first sight with Changrong, a worker at her father’s lumber mill. She likes to sing, and he likes to write music. With their parents’ approval, the two decide to get married, but their plans are thwarted by a Japanese lieutenant, Yokoyama, who has his eye on Xiulan. Yokoyama drafts Changrong and sends him to war in Southeast Asia where almost certain death awaits.

桥的两岸 Two Sides of the Bridge

The final of three local feature films produced by the Chong Gay Organisation in the mid-1970s, Two Sides of the Bridge chronicles the relationship of a young couple, Rufei and Lingfeng, who face the pressures of living in a rapidly transforming Singapore. The only Chong Gay film made by a local cast and crew, it appealed to audiences of the time with its realist portrayal of life in urban Singapore.

This is the screening of the only surviving version of Two Sides of the Bridge. The quality of the film is inherent at source.

三凤震武林 Vengeance of the Phoenix Sisters

A gang of bandits raid the home of a former sheriff, murdering him and his wife. His three young daughters escape and hide separately. Fifteen years later, they have grown up to become warriors, determined to seek vengeance for their parents. The eldest sister, disguised as a man, leaves her teacher and searches for the bandits. Eventually she crosses paths with her sisters, who both unwittingly fall in love with this handsome stranger. Finally, the bandit leader lures them to a bloody showdown, but can the three sisters unite to avenge the murder of their parents?

彩云飞 The Young Ones

Meng Yunlou, a college student from Hong Kong, stays at a family friend’s house and falls in love with their daughter, Han-ni. Han-ni is born with a serious heart defect. She dies when Yunlou left for Hong Kong. Yunlou leads his life in despair until he meets a pop singer Xiaomei, who looks exactly like Han-ni.
