24 March 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 25 March 2017 @ 4:00 pm

House Party: Conversations with filmmakers

Join a post-show dialogue session involving the directors of The Art of Singapore and The Old Voice, which are the winner and runner-up of the 2016 Singapore Heritage Short Film Competition respectively. Discover what inspired them to capture this facet of Singaporean heritage, the thought processes involved in conceiving the short films, challenges, and projects in the making.

Post-show dialogue with Eileen Chong, Director, The Art of Singapore
March 25, 3pm-4pm moderated by David Lee (Singapore Film Society)

Discover from Eileen Chong, the director of The Art of Singapore, on how she worked to uncover the story of one of Singapore’s last movie poster painters. Chong is also the founder of Project Unsung Heroes, which documents ordinary people with extraordinary acts of kindness. The Art of Singapore is the winner of HSFC 2016. The session is moderated by David Lee, vice chairman of the Singapore Film Society.

The Art of Singapore is a documentary that explores the life of Mr Ang Hao Sai, the practitioner of a dying art form – movie poster painting. It traces his journey as an artist and a pioneer, delving into his work – a tribute to the history of Singapore that captures poignant moments. The film is a nostalgic ode to the complexities and growth of Singapore through the eyes of an artist.

Post-show dialogue with Saleem Hadi, Director, The Old Voice
March 26, 3pm-4pm moderated by Chew Keng Kiat (Singapore Film Society)

Learn more about the genre of radio dramas in Singapore and how director Saleem Hadi found inspiration for his film The Old Voice, which was awarded first runner-up in HSFC 2016. Saleem is an accomplished film director who has garnered many accolades, including the 2008 Cannes Distinguished Community Documentary Award. The session is moderated by Chew Keng Kiat, marketing manager of the Singapore Film Society and project manager of the HSFC.

Memories and nostalgia take center-stage in The Old Voice, when the protagonist, an old Indian man, loses his beloved transistor radio, but salvages recollections of his favourite radio dramas with the help of a voice actor.

About The House Party
The House Party is an annual celebration organised by The Arts House where artists, writers and musicians come together to share with us stories that inspire their being and their work. This year, we highlight the various literary expressions across artistic genres through an eclectic range of events by Singapore artists. From a poetic musical dialogue curated by Young Artist Award winner Marc Nair, a showcase of Asian stories by master storyteller Kamini Ramachandran, a photo exhibition by local photographers Liana Yang and Lavender Chang, to jazz and chamber music performances curated by Aya Sekine and violinist Loh Jun Hong respectively. Come join us to celebrate our Singapore artists.
