The second trailer for the American remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, an adaptation of the first novel in Stieg Larsson’s best-selling Millennium trilogy, is a nearly four-minute preview released September 23.

This version from director David Fincher (A Social Network, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), stars Daniel Craig (Casino Royale), Rooney Mara (The Social Network), Christopher Plummer (The Last Station) and Stellan Skarsgard (Thor). It follows the hit Swedish film adaptation released in 2009.

After the stylish montage of images in the teaser trailer previously released, this footage fills out the storyline. It reveals the backstory of journalist Mikael Blomkvist in his search for a wealthy young woman who has been missing for 40 years – or her murderer.

It also shows how he came to work with Lisbeth Salander, the young punk computer hacker played by Rooney Mara (and portrayed by Noomi Rapace in the Swedish film), and how they uncover crime and corruption.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo also features Robin Wright, Joely Richardson and Julian Sands.

Hollywood filmmaker Stanley Kubrick designed the first ever iPad, and not Apple Inc, says rival company Samsung in a bizarre patent suit that cites the director’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” as evidence, according to a media report.

The two companies are “suing each other all over the world” for patent infringement, after Apple accused Samsung of “blatant copying” of its products, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Apple won a temporary injunction against Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Europe.

A patent case against the Galaxy Tab is also running in the US and Samsung has filed its reasons as to why Apple should not be granted an injunction.

One of Samsung’s exhibits was a still image and a YouTube clip taken from Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The clip shows two astronauts eating while at the same time using what appear to be personal tablet computers, the report said.

Samsung says this was an example of “prior art” for the general design of the iPad. It also cited a scene from the 1970s British TV series The Tomorrow People, which appears to depict a tablet computer.

The first trailer for The Lady (Dans la lumière), about Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace Prize recipient who spent 15 years under house arrest, was released August 23.

The 50-second teaser shows the lockdown of the activist’s home and a dramatic appearance to address throngs of followers of her pro-democracy movement. She was already detained when she won the 1990 election with 59% of the votes.

Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh (Memoirs of a Geisha, Kung Fu Panda 2) portrays Suu Kyi and David Thewlis (Harry Potter) plays her husband, Michael Aris. Directed by Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita, The Fifth Element), the film tells an inspiring story of their enduring love amidst political turmoil.

During production, Suu Kyi was released from house arrest and Yeoh was able to meet with her, but in June the actress was deported from Myanmar.

The newest trailer for the remake of the 1984 dance film Footloose was released August 15.

The footage shows a series of snipits from the film depicting a city kid who must adjust when he arrives in a small conservative US town that outlaws rock’n'roll and dancing. He ends up leading the teens in a rebellion against repression.

Kenny Wormald (Clerks II) stars as the new kid in town – the role played by Kevin Bacon in the 1984 film – while Julianne Hough (Burlesque) and Dennis Quaid (G.I. Joe: the Rise of Cobra) star as father and daughter.

Based on the original film, a few changes and some contemporary style have been added to update the story.

“Life in a Day” opens with a shot of the moon and closes with a picture of a snail.

In between, we see people sleeping, brushing their teeth and praying. A baby giraffe is born, a cow is slaughtered and elephants frolic in a watering hole. A Korean man rides his bicycle around the world and an American woman shows off her stitches from a cancer operation. A young couple walks down the aisle in an Elvis-themed wedding and an elderly couple renew their vows to celebrate 50 years of marriage.

The 90-minute film, directed by Kevin Macdonald (“The Last King of Scotland”) and produced by Ridley Scott, was compiled from more than 80,000 YouTube videos shot in 192 countries on the same day — July 24, 2010.

Asking amateur videophiles to chronicle their everyday lives and then turning all that footage into a compelling film proves to be problematic. For every striking scene, there are a dozen mundane ones. It’s like searching for the prize in a cereal box.

Macdonald tries to organize the documentary by assembling montages of similar activities and themes, but that quickly gets old. Other sequences include people answering broad questions such as “What do you love?” and “What do you fear?”
