You never know what you get with scissors, ink, tapes and blades

Is it possible to make a movie without cameras? Certainly, if you have 16mm film and other things like scissors, blades, tapes and inks.

By cutting, carving, rubbing and transferring images onto a clear film base, you can get a handcrafted film which dances into moving images when projected onto a screen.

This magic is collage film, recently presented at a Beijing workshop at Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) by two young Germans from LaborBerlin, an independent film collective embracing a more experimental approach to film production.

The principal technique is to create a series of single images on a long strip of film and then to let images blend seamlessly to produce the illusion of a moving image.

“As the 16mm films run at 24 frames per second, you have to make 24 images to get a 1-second moving picture,” explains Juan David Monroy, one of the two instructors.

Hollywood filmmaker Stanley Kubrick designed the first ever iPad, and not Apple Inc, says rival company Samsung in a bizarre patent suit that cites the director’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” as evidence, according to a media report.

The two companies are “suing each other all over the world” for patent infringement, after Apple accused Samsung of “blatant copying” of its products, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Apple won a temporary injunction against Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Europe.

A patent case against the Galaxy Tab is also running in the US and Samsung has filed its reasons as to why Apple should not be granted an injunction.

One of Samsung’s exhibits was a still image and a YouTube clip taken from Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The clip shows two astronauts eating while at the same time using what appear to be personal tablet computers, the report said.

Samsung says this was an example of “prior art” for the general design of the iPad. It also cited a scene from the 1970s British TV series The Tomorrow People, which appears to depict a tablet computer.

The Seoul district of Chungmuro, which is dubbed Korea`s Hollywood, has had a moviemaker showcase two blockbusters budgeted at 10 billion won (9.2 million U.S. dollars) each two weeks apart in an unprecedented move.
To save time, director Yun Je-gyun a Dong-A Ilbo reporter to hold an interview in a car on his way from Seoul`s Yeouido district to his office in the city`s Gangnam area.

With the 2009 blockbuster “Haeundae,” Yun joined the ranks of directors who have attracted more than 10 million viewers for one film. The reporter poked at him by saying the director had a trace of “ssammai,” or Japanese movie jargon referring to a third-rate movie, in “My Boss, My Hero (2001),” and “Sex Is Zero (2002),” two films that were full of dirty jokes.

“I don’t make ssammai movies any more. Since I got a kid, I wanted to make a movie that I could be proud of myself before my child. The two movies this time are about high tech, not jokes,” he said.

Smartphone character “Talking Tom” has signed with a top Hollywood talent agency in a sign that “apps” are out to break the bonds of mobile gadgets and hit films and television.

“Talking Tom” has become a global sensation since it was launched by startup Outfit7 in Slovenia in July of 2010. The digital “pet cat” is an app that responds to touch and repeats what is said to it with a funny voice.

“Outfit7 has quickly established itself as a leader in the mobile entertainment space,” said William Morris Endeavor (WME) co-chief Ari Emanuel.

“We see a tremendous opportunity for the company and its characters across multiple entertainment platforms,” he continued.

The digital feline was quickly joined by more “Talking Friends” characters that have been downloaded a combined total of more than 135 million times while soaring to mobile gadget popularity.

On Monday, Outfit7 announced that characters “Tom” and “Ben the Dog” are being represented by WME, which has a dazzling client list that includes actress Keira Knightley and pop queen Lady Gaga.

Nokia’s top guns are assembling for a one-day conference in Singapore, as the handset maker tries to fight off in Asia the same kind of attacks from iPhone and Android it has endured elsewhere.

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has had some big wins, but also some big misses, in the Asian market. After Europe, China is the company’s second-largest market and, last quarter, grew by 13 percent over the year before.

But the rest of the Asia Pacific region—which is the company’s third largest market—has been in decline.

As it is in the rest of the world, in Asia, Nokia is not only fighting off the legions of Android handset makers and high end products from Apple (NSDQ: AAPL), but also an onslaught from cheap handset makers like ZTE, who are developing devices on Nokia’s own new platform, Windows Phone 7.

Yesterday, all eyes were set on Singapore, as the company presents its annual Nokia Connection conference, coinciding it with the annual CommunicAsia trade show. The one-day event features presentations not only from Stephen Elop, but devices head Mary McDowell; the head of design Marko Ahtisaari; and developer head Marco Argenti. (It is also being livestreamed.)
