Korean film makers today said that they will call off their boycott of the Busan International Film Festival. The decision means that the 21st edition festival will go ahead in October, albeit on a smaller scale than in previous years. The move follows the acceptance on Friday (July 22) of amendments to the festival’s regulations. Those changes were followed by meetings on Monday between chairman Kim Dong-ho and festival director Kang Soo-youn with industry representatives in order to end the stand off. Jackie Chan’s comedy action film “Skiptrace” jumped to a $60 million four day opening in China, where it bounced far ahead. The film released on Thursday (July 21) and charged off to a $14.7 million opening day. Over the Friday to Sunday period it took a further $44.0 million, according to data from Ent Group. That three-day total is within $1 million of the global total of $44.7 million for “The Legend of Tarzan” which took the worldwide weekend crown according to U.S. tracking service ComScore. China’s media regulator Monday called for the country to accelerate the growth of competitive media conglomerates.The State Administration of Press Publication, Radio, Film and Television said that the integration of different media “falls short of central authorities’ requirement and public expectation,” and set a target of 2020 for improvement, reported state news agency Xinhua. Specifically, media organisations should integrate systems across different media and make greater use of cloud computing and ‘big data.’ This is not the first call for the development of more powerful media conglomerates. Amazon Studios is taking its relationship with Woody Allen to the next level.The streaming giant, according to sources, is in negotiations to fully finance the director’s next film, the untitled Kate Winslet-Jim Belushi starrer.
