About shnit International Shortfilmfestival

Published on September rd, 2011

shnit International Shortfilmfestival is a non-profit organization. Our mission is to promote and support short filmmaking around the globe to an ever growing audience, by creating a multi-platform event for high quality short films.

Our organization is built on principles of excellence and professionalism, rendering the global expansion of the festival possible. Our sustainable growth is a component of the development of a national and international (short) film industry; this requires active cooperation between playground executives which, in return, strengthens the transnational network of shortfilmmakers and the growing community of shortfilmlovers.

shnit International Shortfilmfestival is created and centrally coordinated by the artistic directors in cooperation with our playground executives. The executive board consists of a committee and a field office. Each playground has a festival manager, who is in charge of the organization supported by an organizing committee and a large number of volunteers.

In 2012, shnit International Shortfilmfestival will establish a foundation to continue its work and support its mission

About the IN COMPETITION (shnit OPEN 1 to 10)

The section IN COMPETITION (refer to brochure shnit OPEN 1 to 10) is the core of the festival. Each shnit OPEN programme is has about 5-7 short films lasting approximately 90 minutes.

Other shnit Thematic Programmes

In addition to competition entries, thematic programs are shown giving insights into various thematic areas, film genres and techniques at the current pulse of short film making. We divide our program between four sections showing a selection of the best short films produced internationally and locally: IN COMPETITION (shnit-OPEN), A REAL TREAT, OUT OF CURIOSITY, FOR SPECIAL INTEREST.

* For Singapore edition, Shnit-OPEN 1 to 10 and OUT OF CURIOSITY – Sinema Showoff! ROJAK will be presented from 7 – 9 Oct 2011.

shnit-OPEN is the spotlight of the festival because it’s a widely acclaimed international competition with cash prizes. More than 3,500 short films from 109 different countries have been submitted to last years competition. Around 80 have finally flickered over the screens. This years selection process closes in August.

In order to reflect the diversity of short films, we have created several awards. The members of the international festival jury grant three awards. One award is granted by the audience. The results will only be released by shnit on 8 Oct 2011.

History of shnit

shnit was founded in 2003 in Switzerland (CH) as a two-day event, but grew rapidly thanks to an enthusiastic and supportive audience. In 2008 shnit was the most visited short film festival with 15,000 visitors. With amazing cash prizes over EUR 40.000, we attract a lot of filmmakers to our local and international competition.

Our festival rapidly expanded to a multi-day, multi-city short film festival as Cologne (DE) joined shnit in 2009 and attracted 22,000 visitors. With its roots in Bern (CH) shnit has become a multi-continent festival with the participation of Cape Town (ZA) in 2010. In 2011 Vienna (AT) will be a new playground among other cities…
