The first Festival de Cannes Film Week in Asia made its long-awaited debut at cultural destination K11 MUSEA with its opening night on November 12. Led by Adrian Cheng, founder of K11 Group and Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate of Festival de Cannes, the official opening ceremony launched this iconic week for cinema culture in Hong Kong and across Asia.

Held at K11 MUSEA, Hong Kong’s film industry elite such as director Wong Kar Wai, filmmaker Ann Hui, director Johnnie To, director Yonfan, director Teddy Robin, director Flora Lau, producer Yvette Tang and cinematographer Christopher Doyle attended the opening ceremony while mingling with prominent directors and actors from the 72nd Festival de Cannes including internationally renowned directors Jean Pierre & Luc Dardenne (Young Ahmed), actor Vincent Lacoste of On a Magical Night (Chambre 212) and director Michael Angelo Covino (The Climb) – bringing the spirit of the world’s most prestigious film festival to Hong Kong.

The film industry elites joined the festivities alongside up-and-coming actors and actresses including Fala Chen, Janice Man, Hanna Chan, Adam Pak, Rachel Leung and Himmy Wong, setting the stage for an incredible evening of cross-cultural dialogue over a universal love of film. The opening of Festival de Cannes Film Week was marked by the incubation of the next wave of industry talent, as knowledge and insights were passed down from masters of cinema to the next generation of emerging talent who will shape the future of film.

Following the exclusive cocktail party, the opening ceremony by Adrian Cheng and Thierry Frémaux commenced at the K11 Art House IMAX screen. To present the opening screening of On a Magical Night (Chambre 212), Thierry Frémaux welcomed the guests and was joined by the film’s starring actor Vincent Lacoste. In K11 Art House, the other screens opened to delight VIPs and ticketed guests.

“Hong Kong came so often to Cannes, it was natural for Cannes to come to Hong Kong. We are very happy to be here at K11 MUSEA in Hong Kong,” said Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate of the Festival de Cannes.

“It is my great pleasure to present Asia’s first Festival de Cannes Film Week at K11 MUSEA,” said Cheng. “Our goal for K11 MUSEA and the wider district Victoria Dockside is to build a ‘Silicon Valley of Culture’ in Hong Kong, and in working with Thierry and his team, we have found a partner with the shared vision of propagating film culture, incubating international talents and making world-class cultural content more accessible for our audiences. I hope this is the first of many Film Weeks to come.”

Brought to Hong Kong by Pierre Lescure, President of the Festival de Cannes; Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate of the Festival de Cannes; and Adrian Cheng, Founder of K11 Group and Executive Vice-Chairman of New World Development, the Festival de Cannes Film Week delivers the essence of the 72nd Festival de Cannes, sharing the work of the world’s greatest artists with an unprecedented celebration of creativity, culture and cinema.

The weeklong festival features film screenings, presentations and masterclasses with legendary filmmakers Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne and Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate of the Festival de Cannes. Held at the K11 Art House from 12-17 November 2019, the inaugural Festival de Cannes Film Week will screen six highly acclaimed films from the Official Selection 2019 of Festival de Cannes.
