NEWS: Music Performances and Film Screenings At Refugee Festival in Penang
The Refugee Fest is a festival held last month in Georgetown, Penang, that showcased the talents of migrants, refugees and the Rohingya community in Penang. It included music performances and poetry readings at the refugee festival. A workshop, panel discussions and film screenings about refugees were also held.
Festival founder Mahi Ramakrishnan said she was inspired to come up with the idea of a refugee festival four years ago to showcase the talents of refugees and to use that as a platform to build bridges between the refugee communities and Malaysian society.
“I believe it’s crucial that opportunities are created for them to meet and get to know one another so that we can understand the refugees are just like us: with the same dreams, hopes and aspirations,” she said in a statement Thursday (April 4).
