Showbiz: Films to mark Italy’s 150 years

TO mark the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy from eight independent states to the country we know today, an Italian film festival will be held from June 30 to July 4 at the Malaysian Tourism Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
Organised by the Italian Embassy, screenings for all films start at 8.30pm and admission is free.

The films are:

1. La Presa di Roma (The Capture Of Rome, 1905, Filoteo Alberini): The British Film Institute states that this film is about the capture of Rome in 1870. General Carchidio is blindfolded at Ponte Milvio and taken by coach to General Ermanno Kanzler of the Papal Army. Kanzler refuses Carchidio’s ultimatum to surrender. Troops storm a breach in the city walls. It is said that Italian film industry began with this dramatic film.

2. Arrivano i Bersaglieri (1980, Luigi Magni): In 1870, Rome, then governed by the Pope, is captured by the Italian General La Marmora’s troops. After the armistice, Italian soldier Alfonso kills a Pope’s soldier, the son of Don Prospero who seeks refuge in the house of Don Prospero himself. There, the wife and the daughter of Don Prospero fall for him. But Gustavo, who knows Alfonso has killed Don Prospero’s son, arrives.
