Cannes: Tom Hooper Joins BFI Board, Tom Hanks Film to Close Singapore Fest1 min read

Not all the announcements out of Cannes have to do with movies being sold, or cast, or proposed. Case in point: news released in Cannes on Monday about a pair of Toms, director Tom Hooper and actor/director Tom Hanks.

The British Film Institute has taken advantage of the Cannes media spotlight to announce that Hooper, the Oscar-winning director of “The King’s Speech,” has been appointed to the BFI board of governors.

Hooper will join an organization that is stepping up its film funding operations in the wake of the government shutdown of the U.K. Film Council, which helped fund “The King’s Speech,” among many other films.

Other governors include director Beeban Kidron, college professor Sir Christopher Frayling and National Theatre trustee Rt. Hon. James Purnell. The announcement was made on Monday by Greg Dyke, chairman of the 15-person BFI board.
