International box office: ‘Thor’ rules with $83 million1 min read

The God of Thunder Thor reigned around the world this weekend, taking the top spot with $83 million in 56 markets – the year’s biggest box office opening so far, per The Hollywood Reporter.

The Marvel superhero action film, starring Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek) in the title role and Oscar winners Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins, debuted in first place in the UK, Ireland, France, South Korea, Italy, Spain, Taiwan, Singapore, the Philippines and other markets.

Directed by actor Kenneth Branagh (Hamlet), better-known for his Shakespeare productions, the film opens in North America next weekend and on July 1 in Japan.

In second, Fast Five dropped from second place to collect a robust $45.3 million, expanding into 14 more territories.

The car action adventure starring Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and Paul Walker, reached the top spot in Russia, Germany, Austria and Turkey. It stayed in first in Australia for the second week.
