New York’s Japan Society is hosting a tribute to the comedies of Japanese director Sabu entitled Run, Salaryman, Run (26 Jan – 5 Feb 2011).

The series features five feature films produced between 1996 and 2002, beginning with the actor-turned-director’s debut Dangan Runner. The anarchic road movie premiered internationally at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1997.

The other early comedies at the event are Postman Blues (1997), Monday (1999), Drive (2002) and The Blessing Bell (2003). Sabu is expected to attend several screenings to introduce several of the films.

The highlight of the programme is the international premiere of Troubleman, a three-hour project produced for Japanese television last year. The comedy stars Kato Shigeaki as an unlucky insurance agent who upsets the yakuza.
