New release model could inject money into independent films

The traditional movie release pattern goes something like this: (1) theatrical release, (2) on demand, (3) high-end premium cable (HBO, Showtime), (4) DVD/download and (5) broadcast TV. For the foreseeable future this approach will remain the norm for big-budget Hollywood pictures, the ones with big stars, big directors and big special effects.

“The business model for independent film has collapsed, and anyone who thinks otherwise is basically borderline delusional,” Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles told The New York Times. If digital delivery becomes the answer for struggling indies, what happens to our art houses?
