Silver Spring native trying to beat the fundraising clock for documentary

Silver Spring native Jeff Johns is in a race against the clock to raise the $10,000 necessary to travel the world documenting the persistence of leprosy, despite the availability of free treatment. The World Health Organization offers free treatment for leprosy, but not all governments prioritize leprosy when also fighting against HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, Johns said. “Making an independent documentary for $10,000 is just insane,” he said of the low budget he’ll have for the project. “But it’s kind of now or never.”
